REW’s Aviation programs continue to be delivered worldwide, to pilots and air traffic controllers. Sara KablaouiI was deployed to deliver our most recent program in Oman. Over March and April, she spent two weeks in the capital, Muscat, training the teachers who were going to teach the course there and then five weeks in Salalah, in the south of Oman.
The 28 students from Salalah undertook General Aviation English, a GE course with an aviation focus. It aims to enhance the students’ General English language knowledge, as well as introduce them to aviation related situations, vocabulary and prepare them for some of the non-routine situations that air traffic controllers may encounter. The program has a computer-based component, two text books and was developed by Aviation professionals.
The students were all at different stages of their education. Some had finished university, others were fresh out of high school and the rest were current staff members working in different departments at Salalah airport. The training was a component of a broader course to prepare students to work at the soon to be expanded airport. Sara reports that the students were hard working, enthusiastic and motivated students and, that as a result of their dedication to the program, they are currently undergoing training as air traffic controllers and briefing officers.
REW regularly delivers programs offshore and Sara recommends that people seize the opportunity of working overseas. "Salalah is an incredibly magical city…I’m not sure whether it has to do with its natural beauty, the calm nature of its residents or the fact that it has preserved its culture and traditions. All I know is that I had the time of my life and learnt a lot on a personal, social and professional level."
