IELTS Test

About the IELTS test
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures candidates' ability to use English effectively in the four key language skill areas; listening, reading, writing and speaking as well as grammar and vocabulary. At RMIT English Worldwide we hold the test in one day. Listening, Reading and Writing tests are completed between 9am and 12 noon, with no break during these tests. The Speaking interviews occur between 1pm and 4pm on the same day.
Most Australian universities require an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 on any band score. Foundation, TAFE and college programs require a minimum of 5.0/5.5. Candidates should be aware that the required score for entry to any course may vary for particular courses and different institutions. Candidates should check the entry requirements with the relevant institution.
IELTS Test Structure
The IELTS test contains four modules: the compulsory Listening and Speaking modules and a choice between either the General Training or Academic Reading and Writing modules. The modules are always taken in the same order: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
The General Training module assesses a broader range of language skills. It is more suited to candidates wanting to take work-related training courses, to enter secondary school, work in an English speaking country or for immigration purposes.
The Academic modules assess candidates' ability to use the kind of language needed to follow a course of study - for example, following complex arguments, discussing abstract ideas and concepts and dealing with information effectively.
The written parts of the exam are usually conducted in small rooms, which provide a comfortable environment for exam candidates.

IELTS tests are marked at the RMIT English Worldwide test centre by trained and monitored examiners, and the results are available within two weeks of the test.
RMIT English Worldwide offers IELTS Preparation courses to prepare candidates in both modules of the Test.
Test Results
All candidates who take the test are given a report on their English language ability, which places them on a 9-band scale. The report contains five scores, one for each modules and an overall score. The report also gives a brief description of the candidate's level which is normally valid for two years.
Note: Candidates are given only ONE copy of their Test Report Form and this cannot be replaced. Candidates may request for up to five additional copies to be sent to receiving organisations. Test Report Forms for tests taken more than two years ago cannot be re-issued.
