Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
The CELTA is a widely recognised pre-service qualification administered by the University of Cambridge and delivered world-wide. It is recognised as a pre-service qualification for teachers of English in Australia and overseas.* The primary aim of the course is to develop communicative teaching and classroom management skills for people with little or no previous experience of English language teaching. The course also aims to develop candidates' language awareness and to familiarise them with approaches and materials for developing proficiency in adult learners of English.
* To teach in Australia a degree is also required.
The full-time course is very intensive and applicants are advised to consider the time they have to devote to the course when deciding whether to study full or part time.
To be selected for this course, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be eligible for tertiary education (i.e. have Year 12 or equivalent)
- Have an awareness of language and level of competency in English, both written and spoken, that enables them to follow and complete course assignments
- Meet the minimum requirements of the pre-interview task and interview.

Course Outcomes
CELTA is awarded to candidates who have completed the course and who have met the assessment criteria for all written and practical course assignments. Candidates should be able to :
- assess learner needs and plan and teach lessons which take account of their learners' backgrounds, learning preference and current needs
- demonstrate language knowledge and awareness and appropriate teaching strategies
- demonstrate knowledge about language skills and how they may be acquired
- plan and prepare lessons designed to develop their learners' overall language competence
- demonstrate an appropriate range of teaching skills at this level and show professional awareness and responsibility
